This is possible, but you will need to check, if your friend has set the VM for NAT or Bridged Mode Networking.

If it's in Bridged Mode, then as long as port 3389 TCP is forwarded on his router, you should be able to connect via remote Desktop Connection or RDP.

You can use Remote Desktop Connection, but that would keep it open as well.

Your best bet will be to use Remote Assistance.  From the vm computer, go start, msra.exe and follow the dialog.

RDS is available on all Windows Pro versions. So the question is, is this a "normal" Windows (Win8, Win7 Home or Premium, Win Vista/XP Home) or is it a Pro?

Install ultrvnc on the VM workstation and your workstation

As long as you know the ip address or computer name you will be able to connect and take control of the VM workstation.

Now if you are not on site if you can VPN in to the site you will be able to use Ulravnc to remotely connect.

Works great use it all the time

When you download the software which is free

Run the installer

Only thing you need to enter is the passwords for view  only or admin

On the VM workstation you must install the server option  a minimum

On your workstation just the viewer as a minimum

I always install both never know when you need to view your machine from somewhere else.

I used to use Log Me In until I found this nice application.  Google Chrome Remote Desktop is often on my Windows 7 machines and its proven tried and true. And its FREE.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-remote-desktop/gbchcmhmhahfdphkhkmpfmihenigjmpp
Chrome Remote Desktop allows users to remotely access another computer through Chrome browser or a Chromebook.  Computers can be made available on an short-term basis for scenarios such as ad hoc remote support, or on a more long-term basis for remote access to your applications and files.  All connections are fully secured.

Chrome Remote Desktop is fully cross-platform.  Provide remote assistance to Windows, Mac and Linux users, or access your Windows (XP and above) and Mac (OS X 10.6 and above) desktops at any time, all from the Chrome browser on virtually any device, including Chromebooks.

That very much depends on HOW your VMs are configured ?

e.g. what networking is selected.

Teamviewer or a browser based Remote Control application will work easier if using NAT!

e.g. RDP or VNC, with NAT will require Advanced Network configuration on the Destination.

Teamviewer is installed in the OS.

So install Teamviewer in the VMs, on both source and destination, with Internet Access, and you should be able to connect to the destination, when the Partner Id and Password is displayed.

If you want to connect without a PIN, supply a password on installation, and start the Teamviewer service.

The computer and VM must have access to the internet.
