Hyper-V free

Good afternoon,
My manager seems to believe that Microsoft have released a free version of Hyper-V that can be installed on the server, and then VMs loaded on top (obviously licensed if windows).

My main question is "Is this true, and does anyone have any links to it", and "Does it give access to the storage API's for backup, or is it closed off like VMWare on the free version"?

Thank you

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes, Microsoft does offer Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012. It has some limitations but, they are mainly related to how you control the server itself. Since it is just Hyper-V it does not have all the GUI bells and whistles.

It is listed as an Evaluation - Unlimited.

You will want to look into RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) if you do not already use them.

he is correct, hyper-v is part of windows products, you don't even have to license for windows on host if you install it as server core,
when you have windows 2012 server standards it allows you install 2 windows server VMs without licensing, but when you have Datacenter edition you get unlimited number of hyper-v guests,

Hyper-V Server is a full-featured, enterprise-class, stand-alone Microsoft hypervisor, which provides an optimized virtualization platform that requires fewer updates than a full version of Windows Server. Hyper-V Server consumes half the disk space of a default installation of Windows Server. It supports the same hardware compatibility list as the corresponding editions of Windows Server, and it integrates fully with Microsoft System Center and Windows technologies such as Windows Update and Active Directory.
This product is a free download and its installation is pre-activated. However, the operating systems running on hosted virtual machines each require a proper license.

You can use latest release Hyper-V 2012 R2 with all feature of Hyper-V server. But you will not get GUI interface to manage Hyper-V. You need any other management machine to manage this Hyper-V server.
