I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

After correcting the little typo you made it might work, but not all sed implementations support it:

sed '/value1\|value2\|value3/d' filename > newfilename

If it doesn't work try this:

sed '/value1/d;/value2/d;/value3/d' filename > newfilename
Some rather exotic versions of sed do not even support the second suggestion above.

In this case try:

sed -e '/value1/d' -e '/value2/d' -e '/value3/d' filename > newfilename

I'd use grep

grep -Ev "value1|value2|value3" filename >newfilename
