.net program using msi installer, won't work on new server

Dear Experts,

I have a program that a) the old version won't uninstall. Nothing happens when I go to "programs and features" and click uninstall except it beeps and the program remains. b) Won't install my new version: says "The installer was interrupted before Ion Data Web Uploader could be installed. You need to restart the installer to try again.

So.. as to the first issue, I have no idea how to forcibly uninstall a program.. but if installing the new one would work right, you'd think it would remove the old one.

I'm just using the builtin setup and deployment program. I read on a bunch of similar question that you want to create a log and then read it. But it makes no sense to me and I just have no idea what to do..

But here's the log:

You can try Wise Uninstaller or Msicuu2.exe (if you can locate it).

Those are two programs that can sometimes help with this situation.

Based on the log, would you say that the old program is the cause of the new one not installing? Because I'm kinda worried if I uninstall the old one and can't get the new one installed none of the people in the office will be able to use it..

Even if I compile the setup and deployment program such that it does not remove previous versions, it's still doing the same thing

Valid concerns. I'll take a closer look at the log.....

Meanwhile, do you have the original install program for the old program?
Have you tried installing the new program on a test machine to verify the install functions properly?
What all does this server provide to your network? i.e. Domain Controller, print server, file storage, etc...

After a quick review of the log:

Line 60: MSI (c) (04:B0) [12:34:07:878]: Running product '{AEA07EBA-512E-453C-80CE-429E243D48DB}' with user privileges. DisableMsi policy is set to or defaulted to 1. Are you using an account with Administrative access for the install/uninstall?

Ok I've got the developer's kit installed. I reran this on the main administrator profile (although I am an administrator also) and put it through the wilogutl.exe to interpret the log.

The line that previously was:
Line 60: MSI (c) (04:B0) [12:34:07:878]: Running product '{AEA07EBA-512E-453C-80CE-429E243D48DB}' with user privileges. DisableMsi policy is set to or defaulted to 1. This is the client and the user does not have full admin token. Evaulation is delayed until after credentials provided. This install could still be blocked

Now says:
MSI (c) (34:08) [13:40:15:159]: Product installation will be elevated because user is admin and product is being installed per-machine.
MSI (c) (34:08) [13:40:15:159]: Running product '{AEA07EBA-512E-453C-80CE-429E243D48DB}' with elevated privileges: Product is assigned.

So I think the first error is fixed.

The log tool claims that there are 3 errors:

The machine is windows server 2012. I'm trying to install my program for all users.
The machine has Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Multi-Targeting Pack.. I don't see any .net framework 3.5 but I think if you have 4 it includes the earlier frameworks?

I was under the impression that the properties were perhaps error messages the installer might show you if something was wrong. I dunno though.

Thanks Krompton. I'll keep working on this..

Some of the .NET packages have separate abilities. I'm not a developer by trade but I know that having .NET 4 will not negate the need for some of the other .NET frameworks. They often need to be downloaded separately.

I have this theory that it is the previous version that's breaking it. Maybe that first error is looking for some sort of script (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Rollback\Scripts) to uninstall. Of course, that registry key doesn't exist, the rollback folder or the scripts folder. So I'm not sure what's up there..

The second error I'm thinking might be the fatal error dialog for msi installer itself. Perhaps the banner in their application doesn't fit so it's not showing the dialog.

I think the 3rd error is the generic fatal error occurred, now rolling back installation.

So I guess I'm trying to figure out how to uninstall the old program currently through the registry, is what I'm currently doing.. I don't have the original setup file that was used, or the uninstall would probably work, I'm guessing..

Wise Uninstaller or Msicuu2.exe will both remove the registry entries that indicate that the program is installed. An image of the server, or at least a full backup of the registry would be recommended. That should allow the new program to install if all requirements have been met. I strongly encourage having a full image of the server before proceeding.

Has the new program been successfully installed on a computer other than the one it was developed on? I would not use either Wise Uninstaller or Msicuu2.exe until you KNOW the new program will install somewhere at least.

JeffreyDurhamAuthor Commented:
Yeah, it installs great on my development machine (windows 7). Something about our server seems to make everything difficult. I removed the registry entry (I did export it to a file first, and I actually just moved the older version's files out of the program files 32 folder onto my desktop..) and just rebooted, so now the old program is uninstalled. Was doing the same thing though when I run the setup program on the new version, before I rebooted. The log debugger says "A standard action or custom action caused the failure." for the first error that I've been trying to figure out. The program is actually very basic, all the installer does is install the executable, and a shortcut in the program files folder and the desktop folder. So it definitely doesn't have any custom actions. I think I'll try removing the icons and shortcuts and see if that does it.. maybe something bizarre with the roaming profiles or something is causing that.

Hmm.. ok I didn't end up having to take away the shortcuts. Seems like rebooting it may have somehow fixed it, because it installed perfectly. Sweetness. Ok, so either the optional windows update to server 2012 fixed it, or fully uninstalling the old version and rebooting (that's my best theory). Or maybe somehow other logged in users were preventing me from installing it. I think I'm going to go with the older version somehow interfering though, as that seems to make the most sense, based on the mystical error in the install log.

Thanks for your help Krompton! You very much helped me identify alot of the issues and figure out what each thing might mean. Plus, I think that the first error with the DisableMsi thing and it not being on the administrator account was definitely one of the major things that was wrong with it.
