ESXI password issues

Hi
We have a server here with VMWare ESXI 4.0 installed on flash. Server houses Vms on local storage. Somehow no one can't login to The host and it looks like password is lost.
I did a lot of research and see couple of ways to fix this and get back as root.
1 is to hack password in Linux.
2 is to reinstall the host ( supported by VMWare ) and remount VMs.

My question is may I reinstall VM ESXI 5.5 on that flash and then mount VMs.

Should be able to just install 5.5 and it will detect the datastore in which you should see a prompt to upgrade it.  I would still advise that you have backups of VM's before upgrading :)

When you install 5.5 (provided your host supports 5.5 check the HCL).

It will detect the existing version of ESXi 4.0, and then will try and complete an upgrade.

After the Upgrade all the VMs will be in the inventory.

5.5 requirments are very different to 4.0, and your hardware may not support 5.5!
