Merge two Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster made of 4 nodes with Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2

Hi,

I have 4 Servers :
2 servers are running windows 2012 and
other 2 are running windows 2012 R2.
Right now I have two hyperv clusters :
1 with the windows 2012 nodes
and 1 with the windows 2012 R2 nodes

The 2 clusters are up and running. I would like to merge the TWO CLUSTERS and finally have only ONE CLUSTER
Hope that is possible

You can do this using the Copy Cluster Roles Wizard found in the Failover Cluster Manager. See the steps here for the relevant steps:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/dn530789.aspx#BKMK_MigrateClusterRoles

Once you've migrated the resources on the 2012 cluster to the 2012 R2 cluster then I would decommission the old 2012 nodes, install 2012 R2 on them, then join the nodes to the 2012 R2 cluster providing all of your nodes share the same or similar hardware configuration.

You can get away with nodes having different hardware configurations but it's not recommended.

Are the two clusters sharing the same storage? I suspect not?

You could run a Shared Nothing Live Migration from the old cluster to the new cluster, flatten the old one then set it up with 2012 R2. Once done SNLM the VMs back onto the newly set up cluster.

Hi guys,

thanks for your feedback,
Below are additional informations:
the two clusters are sharing the same storage. I have put all nodes of the same cluster in a storage group. so I have a storage group for each cluster.
VM LUNs a presented to storage group where they belong to.

Okay, then Shared Nothing Live Migration would be the way to get the VMs on 2012 over to 2012 R2. Then flatten the two 2012 nodes, hook them into the storage group on your SAN, stand them up with 2012 R2, and finally introduce each into the cluster.

Make sure to run Cluster Aware Updating after introducing them into the cluster so that all nodes are at the same patch level.

EDIT: If the two sets of servers are using different underlying CPU architectures because of different generation CPUs compatibility mode will need to be enabled on all VMs to allow them to Live Migrate between the two server sets.
