server activation issue

Hello,
We have a Virtual Server with Server 2012 Standard Evaluation with exchange server production, This Server is also a FS and Domain Controller.
I tried to activate this server with our purchased open VL serial number but I getting this error (Attached Print Screen).
I have 30 days for this evaluation server.
our main issue is that we have production exchange server installed on the server, and the server is not activate ! demote the server is not an option,  any other ideas how to activate the server without reinstall it?

Best regards,
Please Assist,
Osher

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. You can't convert an evaluation version of Server 2012 to a licensed product if you are using it as a domain controller.
I was lucky and discovered this before I deployed Server 2012 recently.
I'm sorry but according to Micro$oft you will have to start again from scratch.

I concur, it's not possible. To only correct way to use a VLK key, is to log in Volume Licensing Center, and download the correct VLK media, and use that ISO to install it.

hi, so what is the process to activate the server with exchange production? here what I think to execute:

1.  install new exchange server on VM machine and replicate the exciting exchange, or migrate the data or move the hole exchange to the new server -- appreciate if you can advice the appropriate way to preform this.

2. remove the AD role and activate the server

3. add the role and start the exchange server

also is it possible to remove the AD from the server and leave the exchange installed?

no
not only is it not recommended to have exchange on a domain controller, if you do, promotion and demotion is not supported with exchange installed

i would take a step back and plan things out properly

build another server somewhere (properly activated and all installed updates first) with exchange and migrate everything
remove exchange from the first server.  since you can't change the license of a domain controller, build another one (properly activated and all installed updates first), make it a domain controller, move FSMO roles and change client DNS settings for the new server, demote the first one then change the license.  general overview of what can be done; a lot but this is a bit messy

My soultion solved the problem:
DISM /online /Set-Edition:Standard /ProductKey:XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /AcceptEula

1) your closing comment states DISM resolved the issue though the posted screenshot shows DISM failed - what changed?
2) you are awarding all points to the first comment stating this isn't possible which contradicts the final comment
more information is needed here

there is still something missing
you stated this is also a domain controller which does not allow server editions to be changed (as well as the exchange portion i mentioned earlier) so it's still unclear how the version was allowed to be changed

Note that you cannot convert a domain controller that runs an evaluation version of Windows Server 2012 directly to a retail version.

Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012

I thought I gave the first accurate answer to the OP's question.
He was going to award me the points but ended up giving them all to Seth Simmons.
Doesn't seems right to me.
Seth SimmonsSr. Systems AdministratorCommented:
no points have been awarded and i never stated i should receive them
i have asked many questions because things seem different since the question was originally posted
generally speaking, your initial response was valid
akbCommented:
OK. Well that's weird. I got an email stating  "Robert-Prodigy has accepted another expert's solution to the following question: Question Title: server activation issue". When I looked at the question the points had been awarded to Seth. Now that answer is not showing as accepted. Not sure what's going on here.
Seth SimmonsSr. Systems AdministratorCommented:
i still don't agree with this because of the technical inconsistencies
something changed that wasn't mentioned else what the author did would not have worked
Robert-ProdigyAuthor Commented:
Hi Seth Simmons,
I ran this command "DISM /online /Set-Edition:Standard /ProductKey:XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /AcceptEula"
on my exchange server (Server 2012 EX 2013) and i succesfully activate my server.
I do not know why you do not get the answer that it was the solution on my server.
In addition i added print screen from the Powershell activation.
