veeam backp and replication free edition

I am looking for a free vm backup software.
I did use once the veeamscp not recently.
Does veeam backup replication free edition ver 8.* support online vm backup?
I remember we used to shutdown the vm prior to copy.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes it does. It requires at least an essentials license, I believe. YOu may want to wait for Hancocka to chime in.

Yes, but remember with ANY Backup software for use with VMware vSphere, you MUST have at least an VMware vSphere Essentials Edition.

e.g. you must have a licensed version of ESXi (e.g. paid money to VMware), it will not work with the FREE Edition of ESXi.

Veeam SCP, was just a file copy application, a modified SCP.

I wrote this many years ago...

VMware ESX/ESXi Backup Guide

But you have got many FREE options these days....

Veeam Backup and Replication

VM Explorer by Trilead

Remember with ALL these free editions of backup software, they are cut down versions, which will work for you, but they are really designed as trials for you to test the software, interface etc e.g. some are missing important things like a Backup Schedule, so you've got to run the Backup Jobs manually!

This could be important!

I don't know many organisations these days, that use the free options because they are limited in what they provide.

Maybe time, to organise a budget to purchase a license for the full versions of these, and although Veeam is a clear winner here, a good product I can recommend is Nakivo!

I notice you hardly ever mention ghettovcb or a vcb script, Andrew.  Are those No No's in your environment?

@choward16980 GhettoVCB First mentioned in my EE Article....

VMware ESX/ESXi Backup Guide

However, the world has moved on, and we do not classify these as Backup and Restore applications, because there is NO Restore option, and also VCB was never a backup application, it was a desperate attempt by VMware, to try and state they had a Backup software product, but it was a bunch of scripts and tools, which needed to be used with a Licensed Vendor Backup Software product, the word Backup in VCB was wrong!
