How to collaborate on source that's hosted on remote server

I'm about to start working on a project where the code is hosted on a remote webserver (PHP).

To make sure the application will work on the production server we prefer to develop and test it as we go on a clone of the production environment. Meaning we'll be two-three developers all working on the same codebase hosted on the same server.

What's the best way of achieving this when we'll be multiple developers?

Thanks for the tip!

Is there a tool for adding GIT directly on the server, and administering it remotely via some GUI?
Instead of adding GIT to your server, you can host on GitHub for free if you're code is open-source.  Or on BitBucket, even if it's not open-source, so long as there are not very many accounts involved in the project.  I use BitBucket and I'm very satisfied!
Use GIT is also great, I agree with Ray.
Agree with Walter -- Git > SVN!
SVN has super elegant windows desktop client.
