Microsoft Surface goes offline when left alone

We have a couple of Microsoft Surfaces at our business now and it seems they drop offline whenever they are locked and left alone for a minute or so.  Any ideas on why?  They are both running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Wired or Wireless?  I think probably wireless unless you have an adapter. Check in Windows Advanced Power Management under Wireless that power settings are set to Maximum Performance (not Maximum Savings) and in Device Manager for the NIC, in the Power Tab that you do not allow the computer to turn off the card.

They are actually wired because they do have docks (sorry I didn't mention that before).  I will check on that though.
Wired NIC's have a power property as well, so check in there and let us know.

If no, try connecting out of the dock. I recall seeing some issues with docks.
