MS Word and columns

I am using MS Word 2013

I have a Word document with both Columns (usually some sort of header), and tables

I have a header type of data on page two, and I used Page Layout -> Columns to produce a single line with three columns.

Immediately after that I hit the ===<Enter> to create a line

It took me some time to understand that it was placing an empty line between the columnar data and the line I had created.  So it  looks something like this:

Col 1                 Col 2                Col 3

But if I simply create text, hit return and then enter ===<enter>, I will get a line with no empty line between the line of text I wrote and the line, in other words something like this:

So my question is:  How can I eliminate the line between the columnar data and the line.  When I try to delete the empty middle line of text, the === line is also deleted.

This appears to be some soft of breaking issue for the columnar data.  How can I eliminate the middle line (I have tried lowering its font, but I need to eliminate it all together.

I am not sure I understand. Tables and Columns are VERY different.

Columns do not have lines, and as you add text, it goes first to the end of the page and then to the next column and so on. There are no lines and the cursor is just at the end of the text. I use columns only occasionally.

If you have a table, you might add grid lines so you can see what you are doing. If you are in a table cell, the cell will grow and shrink with your text. If you delete a cell and there are no adjacent cells, the row will be deleted. If you have headers in the table, you are not likely to delete a column. I never have.

You can put your cursor at the end outside the table and begin typing text again. For my own sanity, I enter 5 or 6 blank lines and insert my table in between. This ensures I can get to the end.

If I have misunderstood you please correct me.
It still seems as if you really want to use a table. There is no point in having a header line for each column. Columns are simply way to display continuous text on a page.

As we said before, columns (sometimes called 'newspaper columns') are designed so that the text fills the first column until the last line on that page and then starts again the next column on that  page. They do not distinguish between, say column 1 text and column 2 text as would a table
Your situation is a good example (and I've been there myself numerous times) of picking up the wrong end of the stick. Tables are the usual way to display data in differentiated columns, generally table row by table row.
Columns treat the data as a single block and simply display it in columns to fit the page.

You can actually set the first n rows of a table to repeat on each page - I think that is what you are trying to do.

Also, you can use the border feature to underline the first row of the table to separate from the content.
