"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

That's how 2012 is, similar to Windows 8.x. It starts off with a very basic desktop and with the server control center open which allows you to do most tasks needed. You can add other desktop icons by right clicking an empty desktop space and selecting "personalize" (or something similar), and then "Change desktop settings".

you should have the server manager automatically come up.  And you can press the Windows key on the keyboard and go to the "Metro" menu.  Then search for what you want.

You can also use 'Classic Shell' software  to get old start menu in windows 2012.

Server does not have the 'desktop-experience' enabled by default. So probably the first thing you want to enable is 'deskop-experience' .  The easiest way to do this is via powershell.

Add-WindowsFeature -Name desktop-experience -IncludeAllSubFeature -IncludeManagementTools -Restart

or from server manager
manage Add Roles and Featuresrole based or features based installationSelect the server or servers (doesn't have to be the local server)Desktop Experience isn't a role but a featureselect desktop experience and it will add other required objectsSelect install, after you restart, you have to enable the 'themes service' if you want audio you have to enable and start the windows audio experience.
