MozyPro NAS VSS full Backup Fails on Server 2012 Foundation

We recently added a new server and VSS full backup to the NAS Mozy  fails with "the version does not support this version of the file format". Apprently this worked on their old Server 2003 SBS.

The rest of the backup doesn't seem to start.

Have a look here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2010/11/03/windows-server-backup-failed-with-error-quot-the-version-does-not-support-this-version-of-the-file-format-quot.aspx
Are you sure that full backup is taking place?

Apparently this article for BackupAssist suits to your problem resolving too: http://kb.backupassist.com/articles.php?aid=3298

It's actually running it's own application. VSS settings show "VSS Full Backup". See attached.

I saw the Samba thread too but have not yet verified OS of the NAS. I will see if I can telnet to the device.

What does the last message say? Preparing the backup image of one of the...?

"There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set"

Ok, so it is a volume backup then. Check the Samba version of NAS.

I don't see a way to interrogate the OS via the Mozy application so assume it takes a telnet program like Putty. I don't even see a reference to telnet on Mozy knowledge base so not sure it's even allowed.

On a happier note it looks like a backup did run yesterday. The errors in the application went away when I opened settings. I'm not sure if the backup was changed yesterday to avoid the problem area or the application mysteriously fixed itself.

Did you restart anything since its last failure or selected a checkbox anywhere?

Randy DownsOWNERAuthor Commented:
No I didn't restart anything or change any settings. As soon as I invoke settings from MozyPro application it populates the backup sets & I can see that jobs ran OK in the history. I thought that the Mozy application & the Windows Server backup errors were related but the Mozy application seems fine.

Perhaps we don't need Windows Server backup since the Mozy Application seems to be doing fine.

Backup of volume \\?\Volume{ade14c36-7ba9-11e4-93e7-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. The version does not support this version of the file format.

Interesting, seems like you have two backup approaches (Server Backup and Mozy Backup). And the first one is the one which fails. Because of the Samba version. And Mozy at the same time works.
And yes, two backups would be excessive.

Actually there are 3 backups ABS, Mozy & Windows Server. The Mozy backup copies the .bak file to the cloud so needs the ABS backup to run 1st.

The original issue was getting the ABS backup to run via scheduler but it prompts the user to click a button so we need a flag to suppress that. I'll open another question for that.

Since the ABS backup didn't work via scheduler the user scheduled Windows backup and that's the errors we are seeing.

It turns out my client does want the Windows Sever backup too. The LinkStation NAS doesn't support telnet so the Samba fix won't work.

Protocol Support: TCP/IP
SMB, FTP, AppleTalk (File Sharing)
HTTP (Management)
NTP (Time Synchronization

Then they need different NAS storage or contact LinkStation for fix.

Yeah I think that's probably the route to go for  Windows Server backup on that NAS. I did find the parameters to automate their ABS3 backup so maybe that will suffice.

I appreciate your feedback.
