excel document - make a column so that they are text rather then number

I have a column that is somehow be interpreted by excel as numbers.  How could i make it so that excel sees it as text. This is Excel 2013

Press Ctrl+1 in that column which will open the format cell option and in their select the text option..and then enter your number and excel will read them as text..

The above solution is probably best, but

If you type a single inverted comma  '  before a number (or anything) it will always be seen as text by excel.
'56      The ' won't show.
