Email to public folders is slow

Sending an email to a public folder takes 14-21 mins to appear in the folder. The logs show it is being delivered within a minute at least. To rule out being a workstation or client issue I get the same result using our webmail client. This recently started within the last few days and our servers are setup to update from a WSUS and we have not pushed out any updates in a month or so. Exchange 2010 version 14.01.0438.000 any ideas?

Thanks. Unfortunately IT director will not agree to an update. :\
For what reason?
You are unsupported. I cannot even tell you to call Microsoft either because they will say the same thing.
Public Folders went through extensive development after SP1, so the problem has probably been resolved.

If the server is exposed to the internet then you are at risk, there are a lot of patched bugs.

The system has always been functioning fine up until yesterday. My job is to exhaust all options first and covey this information to him. If I turn up nothing then yes an upgrade may be performed but the likelihood of this is minimal since the system does function fine and the only hassle is dealing with a several minute delay.  If this is all I have to go on I will accept your answer and move along.

Thanks.
In the current security environment, the "if it isn't broken don't fix it" attitude doesn't really work.
Furthermore Exchange is actively developed, the service packs and rollups introduce features and functionality, including resolving issues and support for later versions of Exchange.

If you had anyone look at the server they would all try to do the same thing.
Updating Exchange effectively reinstalls the product - it has reached the point where I don't even do any troubleshooting of the product until it is fully up to date.

The situation was resolved by rebooting both CAS servers. This dropped the time down from 14 minutes to 2 mins. I cannot reboot the systems during any production time so I came here looking for a solution thinking it was something else. I apologize I have been unable to update this sooner as I had to wait for the opportunity to come along. I accepted your solution at the time so I could move on. However I marked it as a C because I am unable to find any KB articles or Microsoft documentation that states email will/does slow down due to lack of patching. Upgrading is a valid answer but it wasn't the right answer. This just appears to be an opinion, not an expert solution.

How can we move on and put this behind us?
