asked on

what is vm.tmp.vhdx ?

I have virtual machine running on Windows Server 2012 R2 hyperv. Today I was going to move it to different partition when I noticed that there is a large file with the same name as the name of the hard disk with .tmp, vhdx extention.

so in effect there are 2 file in Virtual Disks folder for that machine named:

vmachine.vhdx and vmachine.tmp.vhdx

What is this file?
Can I delete it (it is 150GB)

Hmmm - it is only me who has access to it, and I usually in cases like that rename the file in different format (.copy.date.vhd)
I will try to move the file and attempt to start the VM.

I have started the VM with the .tmp.vhdx file moved out of the folder and nothing happened. All seems to be fine. Cliff Galiher's explanation must be correct.
