"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

thanks, works
but performance seems to be really slow.
Mike EghtebasDatabase and Application DeveloperCommented:
Yes, unfortunately when you include an operation on a field in WHERE clause, it runs it for each row. In your case for 100 records, left() and right() are performed 200 times combined.

I have not been able to come up with some other solution yet.

You have to put the left bracket in brackets:

select *
from customer
    NAME NOT LIKE '[[]%'

That leaves NAME "sargable" for best performance.  Do not use LEFT() or SUBSTRING(), as you should always avoid using functions on a column whenever you can.
