Basic questions about setting up https in Apache

Although I've seen https in URLs countless times, I've never really explored in to how to set up such a thing.

When people say "setting up SSL", this is what they're talking about, right? I mean the end result will be the use of https in the URL?

I know if I called up my web host and told them I'd like my URL to be https instead of just http, they'll do it for me, but is this something I can do on my local Apache server as well? Is it hard to set this up?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

https means http over SSL, so yes, when people say to setting up an SSL certificate for using on an web server, this is about https.

For using SSL you need a certificate. This normally have some extra cost, and also some knowledgements to configure it.

My advice is, if your hosting provider offers the opportunity to hire the certificate with him and then they make the configuration for you with no extra cost, I suggest to take it.

Hope it helps. Regards.
