Image in website not loading all the time

Hi, I'm working on a website for my new software release and on my main page I have a prominent banner image that loads sometimes, and other times doesn't load. I'd say about 2/3 of the time it doesn't load... really weird. The site is a template I got from a free template site on the web and I modified it for my needs. I'd rather not post the live URL here as I still want to keep my new software release under wraps, but I will send a private message with the URL.

Thanks!

I'm more than happy to take a look, especially if I'm able to reproduce the error or not.  If the image is hosted somewhere your network could be playing havoc and timing out so it's definitely worth testing from another network.

First place to look is trying with another browser.  Secondly, look in the browsers dev tools, network tab to see if there's any issues in getting that particular image. Thirdly, disable the cache while testing.

The image is loading fine for me each time.  Did you debug using the browser dev tools and see if there's any errors in the console or an issue with receiving the file?

I did notice that there was a 404 (not found) loading the jQuery library so you fix that.

Thanks Rob, just tried in Internet Explorer (I normally use Firefox). 10 out of 10 loaded fine with IE. Then tried in Firefox... only loaded successfully 5 out of 10 times. Weird eh? I'm going to try Chrome now on my other computer...

Thanks

Interesting. Have you got any (can't think of the right word) advanced caching going on? In opera browser, it's called "off road", on chrome it's called "data saver". I suspect Firefox will have a similar setting so make sure it's off as it's not as smart as it makes out to be

Just tried on Firefox on my 2nd computer... 10 out of 10 loaded fine. That's strange. Could it be something off with the copy of firefox on my man computer?

Thanks

Tried Firefox, IE and Chrome on my 2nd computer - all 10 out of 10 loaded nice and fast. Must be something up with Firefox on my main computer...

Rob... you had wote before:

"Secondly, look in the browsers dev tools, network tab to see if there's any issues in getting that particular image. Thirdly, disable the cache while testing. "

Where do I find this "dev tools" you mention... and also how to disable the cache.  I don't know where to find the screen that you show in your screenshot. Sorry, I'm not an experts on the inner workings of firefox....

Thanks

That banner doesn't even load properly when my reload the file locally in my browser... in other words, just viewing the html file locally in firefox. Very strange.

Thanks

Certainly sounds like a Firefox issue. Have you tried chrome, opera, safari?

Gonna download and try chrome, opera, safari on my main computer here soon.

Here's something interesting Rob - I fixed the missing jquery.js file by putting it in my \js folder and it just made everything worse: my banner image wouldn't even show up at all locally on my main computer in Firefox, and on my 2nd computer the banner image wouldn't show up at all (failed 10 out of 10) on Firefox, IE and Chrome. And on IE, it showed a small warning icon at the lower left that said "3 errors". I then removed the jquery.js file from my web server and now the whole page loads fine every time on the 2nd computer in all browsers. I'm going to comment out that line in my html file that calls jquery.js - it's clearly not needed.

Thanks

The fact it makes a difference tells me you have other JavaScript running that you may not want running. As jQuery us just a library (does nothing on it's own ) then another script is utilizing it's functions. Make sense? If one of those is failing it will potentially affect how the page loads

OK, installed Chrome and Opera on my main computer. Both loaded my banner successfully image 10 times out of 10. Then tried Firefox on my main computer one more time, the banner loaded successfully only 4 times out of 10.

I don't have a Mac to try Safari.

Thanks

You don't need a Mac for safari but having tested chrome and opera I wouldn't worry about it
Try running Firefox in safe mode and see if that makes a difference

OK, how do I set it to safe mode Rob?

Tried Firefox in Safe Mode Rob, and it loaded successfully 30 out of 30 times.

Ok that's progress.  What plugins do you have installed for Firefox?  An Ad-blocker is a common problem with false positives so look to disable that or whitelist the site you're viewing.

Attached are 2 screenshots showing all the plugins for Firefox I have Rob. One of them seems to be on the list twice:

Microsoft DRM 9.0.0.4503

... don't know if that's bad or not.

Thanks

ok disable fox input and see how you go

shawn857Author Commented:
Well, without trying to disable that, I'm getting perfect success now loading my page... go figure! Anyway, the problem (if any) is only local to my copy of Firefox... as long as other people can load my page fine, that's all I really care about. Thank you for your help Rob!

Cheers
