Graphics issue dell laptop

We have a dell latitude E6330 with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated. The user is now running autocad, revit, point cloud and is running into issues. Is there anyway to increase the perfomance without buying a new laptop (already up to RAM limit)

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No its not possible to upgrade graphics card in that laptop model. Actually there are nearly no models out there that support upgrading of the graphics device.
See specs sheet here for your laptop.

The only thing is you could try to install the latest drivers for  the intel HD graphics and see if it will increase performance a little bit. but it wont be much.

I've seen this kind of problem solved by the acquisition of a graphic workstation (with a Quadro/FirePro professional graphics card, 16-32 GB of RAM, SSD etc).

Then the senior architect was able to simply RDP into the workstation. Basically the laptop served only as a thin client.

As far as I understand the following description, RPD will not benefit from a good cgraphics card on the host machine.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa383015%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

They say there:

"On the server, RDP uses its own video driver to render display output by constructing the rendering information into network packets by using RDP protocol and sending them over the network to the client. "

So I think its just some software rendering and all done by CPU. But I might be wrong about this, its just my interpretation of the msdn article.

Yes, RDP uses it's own video driver for display.

You can improve it's responsiveness for Autocad by switching to RDP 8: http://www.thecadmasters.com/wordpress/index.php/2013/01/03/autocad-revit-and-microsoft-remote-desktop-protocol-rdp-8-0/

You can't improve the graphics performance directly;  but it's likely you'll see a nice improvement if you change the hard drive to an SSD.    You can get SSDs in the 500GB range these days for ~ $200, and they will dramatically improve all disk-related activity on the laptop.     I suspect that much of the performance problem you're seeing is due to paging due to the memory demands of large graphics objects ... and if that's the case, an SSD will provide a big boost, since paging activity will be MUCH faster (about 1/250th the time it takes with a rotating drive).

This would be a good choice for an SSD:  http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E500B-AM/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428790671&sr=1-1&keywords=500GB+SSD
