Windows Sever Foundation

Does this product have a 'regular' windows interface?  Can I use it to run .CMD scripts and essentially be the network workhorse for backing up folders?

Not sure.  LOGICALLY, it should be fine since the requirements are that it be the FSMO master.  That means only ONE Foundation server, but other non-foundation, non-Essentials class servers should be fine.  But remember it has a MAXIMUM of 15 users.  That means a MAXIMUM of 15 user accounts in AD!

Yes, it has a regular interface.  It's limited to 15 users MAXIMUM and if setup as a DC it must be the FSMO master.  It's also limited in hardware capabilities - 32 GB of RAM and 1 CPU.

I like to have a network "bitch" .  Something that can run all of the backup scripts and be a general dogs body. Typically, thats my workstation.  This might be the thing I'm looking for.

Can it join the domain as a member server and not be a DC?

I believe not:
Must be the root domain controller in a domain
If you replace the current root DC ... but that's probably not what you have in mind.

Think af this server as the old Small Business Server without all the bells and whistles (Exchange etc.) of this.

No - if you read the information in the link I provided, it's quite clear on this:

You will receive a warning message if the server is not joined to an Active Directory® domain at the root of the forest. If you do not correct this, you will receive notifications advising you of the violation of the terms of the license agreement. Eventually, the server will shut down. If your server is not joined to the domain at the root of the forest, disjoin the domain and then rejoin the domain at the root.

Can there be other DCs in the domain?

I believe there can - can't see why not. But that second DC could not be a Foundation version, thus it had to be a Standard version, so - as this is much more expensive - it wouldn't make much sense.

Regard the Foundation version as a stand-alone server in a simple setup with one switch and max. 15 workstations.
