primary and backup wan

I am new to Riverbed Steelhead devices, and have a very simple question. Our site has two WAN routers primary & Backup. Do we need two riverbed steelhead devices, or just one? Please let me know.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. We are looking for WAN acceleration out to WAN network from Cisco routers. As you know the steelhead devices go betwteen Router and site switch. We have two site routers connecting to primary and backup switches. So, do we need two different Riverbed devices??

While I am unfamiliar with the appliance, the following link might help answer your question illustarting the likely configuration you might have.

The version might be older than what you have, but the aspects might be close enough to get you to the answer.
