Lync 2013 Enterprise Voice Direct SIP Trunk to Cisco Voice Gateway

Is there a way to directly create a SIP trunk from Lync 2013 to a Cisco Voice Gateway or is it required to go through CUCM/CUCM Express? From what I have found researching it seems it is necessary to use CUCM/CUCM Express or some similar.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You should be able to integrate cisco voice gateway with Lync 2013 as long as they are supported and qualified by Microsoft.
