Search computers on the network and return the version of a specific DLL

Hello,

I have a VBA application that depends on a specific version of the VBA7 DLL file.  Lately, some users seem to have found a version (through updates or whatever) that is incompatible with the application.

Rather than wait for the users to discover they can't use the application, I would like to be more preemptive in discovering which users have the bad file.  Is there a way I can create a batch script or something that will search the network and return a list of which computers have which version of the DLL?

If you're ok with using Microsoft's sigcheck https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897441.aspx...
In your logon script .bat file, add this:

set logfn=\\server\publicshare\\DLLVer_Results.txt
set dllname=c:\path\nameofDLL.dll
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('sigcheck -q -n "%dllname%"') do (
  >> "%logfn%" echo %date% %time% %computername% %dllname% ver=%%a
)

For a .vbs method, e.g. named DLLVerRslts.vbs...
set args = WScript.Arguments
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
WScript.Echo fso.GetFileVersion(args(0))
Wscript.Quit

Open in new window

cscript //nologo DLLVerRslts.vbs C:\Path\To\MyFile.dll
