I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

According to this error, this document is checked out by by another user.
You could check the locked document in Document Library settings -> Manage files which have no checked in version (the link under  Permissions and Management section).

Hope this helps.

There may be multiple reason for this. I'll order then in terms of how likely they can occur order:

1- The document is currently being edited/checked out to someone else.
2- Microsoft Office applies a 10 minutes lock to any document if someone else have opened the document in their client application like MS Word or MS Excel.
3- Sometime there are known issues with Office and SharePoint integration.

If you can tell us which version of SharePoint and MS Office you use, we can suggest further.

Meanehile, try opening the file from your application rather than cliicking on the file. To do that you copy the link of file and open MS Word/Excel. Then go to open menu and paste the link of the document and see if you can open the document or not.
