Query to find if a Oracle database is ASM managed

can you please help us with a query to find out if a Oracle database is ASM managed?

we are in need of it for a script that backups the database,

Look at any of the data files from any view that has them, like dba_data_files?  If it starts with a '+' then it is ASM managed.

There are several ASM specific views you can look at as well:
This is a 12c doc link but I think the views are also in 11g.  I just cannot find the 11g page that defines them this nice:
