Restore a mailbox in mac mail

I have a good Time Machine backup of my system. In mac mail I had a folder "Charlie" that is messed up. So I tried to restore "Charlie" from my Time Machine backup. However, when I do, the folder only starts with messages from July 2014 and older. There were plenty of messages from 2015 in there, but when I do the restore somehow it is not getting these. Maybe I am missing some crucial step?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am using OS X Mountain Lion on a 2012 iMac.

Thanks
Mark

Check under Options in your Time Machine prefs to make sure you haven't excluded any folders from backups.

Hi strung. Thanks for your comment. I have checked and the mailbox "Charlie" is there. It is just that when I restore it (from yesterday's backup in which all of the 2015 messages were there) none of the messages from July 2014 to present are there.

What do you mean when you say that "the mailbox 'Charlie' is there"? Do you mean it is included in the "excluded" list in the Time Machine prefs? If that is the case, Time Machine won't back it up.

When I open up mac mail, the folder "Charlie" is in the list of folders, but when I select it and look at the contents, all of the messages from now back to July 2014 are missing. Yesterday when I opened that folder in mac mail, all of the recent messages WERE there.

Sounds like you replaced Charlie with the one you recovered from your time machine backup.

When you did the restore, did you follow the instructions under the title "Restoring specific files or folders" about halfway down this page:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201250  ?

You need to restore Charlie from a date just before it started to get messed up.

By the way, before trying to restore the mailbox from a backup, did you try rebuilding the mailbox database:

You could try restoring from yesterday's back up, then rebuild the database.

I was using yesterday's backup (I just screwed up the mailbox today.) I have rebuilt the database after following all of the restore steps in the links you provided, but still I am missing about a half year of messages. I can't figure out how they would be there yesterday, but not today after doing a restore unless there is some step I am leaving out.

When you do a restore, TM will ask you where to restore to, or will restore to the desktop. You then have to move the restored folder to replace the original one. This should be done with mail shut down.

Do you think it is necessary to restore the whole (Mail) folder of mailboxes instead of just the one mailbox, "Charlie"?

karnac2020Author Commented:
I did do the restore with Mail shutdown.

Per the link I earlier sent you:

"To restore a file, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both. Right-click or control-click on a file in the Time Machine window to see additional options."

It should not be necessary to restore the entire mail folder, but you may have to do the rebuild mailbox after restoring.

I have tried all of your suggestions but have not been able to see the missing messages. Obviously there is something I am missing or doing wrong.

Maybe you don't have the messages sorted right or have a filter set.

Check to make sure you have the mailbox sorted by date. (See screenshot attached)
