yes you can have a 2012 R2 domain controller with existing 2008 or 2003 domain controllers
when you install the ADDS role on the first 2012 R2 server, the schema will automatically be upgraded

When you mean Under it, are you meaning add it as another DC? If this is true then you need to make sure that you have a Forest Functional Level and Domain Functional Level of 2003. You will then also need to do a Forest/Domain Prep as well before you can promote this 2012R2 server as a DC.

If you just want to add it as a member server you can also do this as well, by simply joining it to the domain.
