Canon Copier - Scan to email failing after server migration.

I have just about completed a migration from Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host with multiple Server 2012 R2 VMs. Also as an interim, I have a Server 2008 R2 VM running Exchange 2010.
I have completed the migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and uninstalled Exchange 2003 from SBS.
We have a Canon iR-ADV C5250 copier. This is the main printer, copier and scanner at our Head Office.
A couple of weeks ago, towards the end of the Exchange migration...the scan-to-email function of the copier stopped working.
It took some digging in the settings of the copier, but I eventually found a reference to the SMTP server at:
Settings/Registration : Function Settings : Send > Network Settings - E-Mail/I-Fax Settings
The setting was pointing to the old exchange 2003 server, I edited the setting and pointed it to the new Exchange 2010 server. After that it has been scanning happily to email, for several weeks.

I was pretty sure that I have moved everything off the old server, so today I shutdown the old server. Within a few minutes I was notified that the scan-to-email function no longer worked. I tested it a few times and it kept timing-out. I had another look at the copier settings and it was still pointing to the new Exchange server for SMTP.
In the end I turned the old server back on and now we can scan-to-email again.

I don't think it could be an email thing, because Exchange 2003 has been uninstalled from the SBS server, so all email must be going through the new Exchange 2010 server.

I am not sure what is causing this issue and I can't even think of where to start looking or how to troubleshoot. There must be some function that the old server is still providing, but I don't know what it could be.

Can someone out there who is smarter than me please point me in the right direction???

If you are using a name for the SMTP server, double check which DNS/nameservers are configured on the 5250. It is likely pointing to the old server for DNS and when the SBS is off, it can not resolve the servername.

Correct the tcp/ip settings to reflect tge functioning DNS server in the environment and you should be set.

Excellent, that was it! There was a DNS setting in the copier network settings and it was still pointing to the IP address of the old server. As soon as I pointed it to the new server the scan-to-email function started to work again.
