Shuting down of CAS/HUB

Hi All,

I have to perform a test activity.

Exchange Design Detials
a.MBX servers -3 (DAG enabled)
b.CAS/HUB-3 (cas and hub are installed on same server)
c-Edge Server-2

Perform a controlled individual shutdown of servers(CAS/HUB) CAS/HUB TRANSPORT servers and ensure that the exchange email service is not impacted. We will keep one server shut done at one time for 30 minutes. In this test we want to check that HA for CAS/HUB is working or not.

After shutting down one server, what are the points/test do i need to check to verify that services are working fine and the high availability feature is also working fine.

Please suggest

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

On the CAS Server you need to check users are able to access the Outlook Web App, Autodiscover, Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook Anywhere, POP3, IMAP4, and the RPC Client Access array) to access Exchange services and data. After a Failover normally you need change the mapping of DNS Records and point to the new server the same is applicable to Hub transport server as well.

For more information on the Failover and Switchover you can refer the below link

Hi Manik,

Thanks a lot for information.
I need suggestions regarding some test/activity which i can perform to verify that my other two cas/hub servers are working while one is shutdown.

I have two cas/hub servers are at one site and one cas/hub server is on another site.
Do i need to change the DNS or it should work on iteself in case of shutdown.

As long as you only shut down the server in the site with two servers, you should be able to send email and have access to OWA and Outlook.

Of course that is dependant on your DNS resolving to the correct place. If you have a load balancer then you will be fine. If you don't, but you do have a CAS Array then just change the DNS entry to point to the live server. Ditto for all other host names in use on the platform.

The only way to test this if you're able to send email and have access to Outlook & OWA everything is working as expected. If you don't use Load Balancer then you need to change the DNS records and point it to the server which is active.
