Once you back up the log, SQL will truncate it as soon as it can, after the next checkpoint, if it can.

Do you mean you need to backup and then shrink the log file size?

What recovery mode does your database work with?
Lee SavidgeCommented:
In SQL Managament Studio:

Right click on the database with the large LDF
Tasks -> Backup
Backup Type: Transaction Log

SEt whatever options you need, back up the log file to a local drive. It will truncate it when it has completed.

You must include a transaction log backup when you have the recovery model set to full otherwise your log file will fill the disk.
