DNS entry for our external website

Hi, I just added an A Record for www on our internal DNS server (for our external website.)   I can now get to the website fine from inside our network but I am unable to get to several sub-directories.  Do I need to add additional entries, and if so how?

For instance I can get to: www.ourcompany.com  but I cannot get to www.ourcompany.com/helpdesk

Any thoughts?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The correct way to do this would be to add a new forward lookup zone for your external site in DNS and then add any records you need in that zone.

That being said .. the way you have it set just now .. if you can get to www.example.com, then getting to www.example.com/example should work as the resolve works for the root domain.

Hi,

Please can you describe (or post a screen shot of) the exact error you get when trying to go to www.ourcompany.com/helpdesk ?

Is it possible that the sub-page references a resource that is on a different sub-domain than www?  For example, something on images.ourcompany.com?  If so, then you'll probably need to add a record for that too as for www.ourcompany.com.

If www.ourcompany.com is resolving correctly (which it must be if you can go to the root / home page), then the subfolder should work too, since the name resolution is on the server (www.ourcompany.com) only.

Can you get to www.ourcompany.com/helpdesk from outside (home for example)?

Thanks,

Alan.
