"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Since you are using dirsync, you need to make the changes in the local AD indeed. You can do it on O365 side as well, but any changes you make there might get overwritten by dirsync. In any case, this is the cmdlet you can use:

Set-Mailbox -WindowsEmailAddress

The cmdlet will add the alias, make it primary and preserve the old one. You need to connect PowerShell to EO to run it, here are the instructions in case you need them:

you can manually go into each users account in ADUC but it will take longer

Is the domain verified with O365 then? Try running the cmdlet for one of the users, see where it takes you.
