Exchange 2010 Log files not reducing after FULL backup

I have 2 Exchange 2010 servers in a cluster. I am running out of space.

They both have there own Storage and share a DACL.

I was able to perform a complete Windows backup on one of them (using VSS  Full backup option).

Any ideas why the log files did not truncate?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Do you not have ongoing backups? I strongly recommend getting a backup solution that backs up the servers, on-site, off-site and allows for restoring the machine virtually.

Onto the question, can you enable circular logging? Typically the only time you can't do this is if you have no space at all and the services won't start.

Trying enabling the circular logging and it should wipe out the log files:

Your next step is to start backing up your servers.

1) First check the statsus of vss writer using below command

C:\>vssadmin list writers

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
   Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
   Writer Instance Id: {a3e662a9-f672-4d0a-b0dd-4e1c577d1328}
   State: [1] Stable

The state should be "Stable" ,if failed try to reboot the server and rerun the backup.

2) Enable and disable Circular logging - as suggested earlier by "xKincaidx" enable circular logging once enable all the logs files will automatically delete by exchange then after logs deletion please disable circular logging so exchnage server will again create log files

there are no errors in the Backup logs it was completed successfully.

VSSdmin does show  a Retryable error.. Will reboot and run backup job again.

If that fails I will turn on circular logging. I will go ahead and close question and assign point..

Thank you!
