error file access denied you need permission to perform this action when trying to recover data off hdd

Hi techs, Im building a new laptop for an end user and trying to get his data off the old drive.  I cant copy anything b/c Im getting error, file access denied you need permission to perform this action..  I took the drive out and connected it to an adapter since I kept getting that error.  Im still getting the same error.
I tried logging on as local admin
I tried making myself the owner
I tried scanning for malware/viruses.
I tried the tool at http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Nothing is working.

Any help is appreciated.

boot from a live knoppix cd, and copy your files : http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=knoppix

As noted above the permissions are given to system account and you cannot copy it out even with DC Admin account. Either take the ownership or use a bootable CD to copy out the data in different environment.

nobus, where's the English download?

noxchoGlobal Support CoordinatorCommented:
You can use Paragon Rescue CD Free for it. It is based on Linux as well and has a convenient user interface.

No, I just need to know where to go in Knoppix to find the files on C:

The drives are not mounted like in Windows. Just browse all sda volumes and see which of them contains Windows folder.
Did you use Knoppix distros before?

No never used this.  Looks cool tho.

How do you browse?

this discusses it :  http://lss.wisc.edu/how-to/data-off-dead-hard-drive

Yes.  There's nothing in any of those files.  Anything in folders just shows what's on the CD.

Not sure what a screenshot will do.  If you know what Knoppix looks like, it's just that.  I dont see any C: drive data.

you will not see C: - i posted select hda, or such
did you read the article i posted ?

It looks cool but seems like it is not yours. With Rescue Kit you have more options which are pretty Windows looking.
