How to bypass the Windows 8 password.

I bought an elderly friend a windows 8 laptop. This person soon after had to undergo surgery and because of heavy anesthesia etc. she forgot her windows password. So how can I bypass the windows 8 password authentication? I talked to a computer service center, and they said they could do it, however it would cost me at least $45.00.

Does anyone know how I can bypass the windows 8 authentication? Or somehow retrieve the password.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You cannot retrieve the password if she forgot it.  You can reset it with various tricks on the internet.  One of my favorite and more common ones is renaming the utilman.exe file with the help of a Windows Vista or later install disk.  For a detailed set of instructions, google utilman.exe trick or follow these directions:

Agree with above experts, both ways work. But the pogostick one is more smooth as it will not let a backdoor in the system if you dont undo the steps from solution 1. But given link also explains how to undo it. You just need to follow the instructions to the end, even you already have access to your windows again.

if it used a microsoft account then you have to use the microsoft account recovery https://account.live.com/acsr

@David: Yes but only if you want to get back THAT specific account. If its just to get back inside the PC again, then you also could activate the build in administratror account with the pogostick then use this to logon create a new user and lock the administrator account again.

But on win8 you need to be careful resetting the password, if bitlocker is used the files encrypted inside the account of which the password is reset are not decryptable anymore until the correct password is remembered again. Encryption is especially turned on when a microsoft account is used, but then local password reset will not work. and MS may have a recovery key for bitlocker, depending on your PC configuration.

in order to use pogostick secure boot must be disabled in the bios AND the drive is not bitlocker encrypted
