Need a log of the amount of traffic on Exchange

Hi folks, we want to keep a log of the traffic going around our exchange system to gauge quiet times etc etc. and I am trying to find a way to get some metrics for the study.

One idea was to use Perfmon to monitor the exchange servers to see how many messages are being sent around the system at any given time. We're not worried (at this stage) about the size of the messages, but want to know at a minute by minute basis how many messages are being sent. We will then log this, and create a chart to show this to Snr Mgmt.

However, I am struggling to find the correct metric to view in Perfmon, and was wondering if anybody had any ideas on this?

Answers on a postcard please,

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The best tool I ever used was Splunk (free up to 500 MB of data indexed in 24 hours).  Besides that, you could free tools from SolarWinds, ManageEngine or Paessler which is also very powerful.

Thanks, I was wondering though what metrics I need to be monitoring - ie there is a vast range of metrics available in Perfmon, but none of them seem to be monitoring what I want...

Having had a quick look at Splunk, whilst this looks a superb package, I think a) we'll have more than 500MB data flow per day, and b) looks quite complex to setup for what on the face of it, is a simple request.

Any other ideas on this one?

Try ManageEngine free Exchange Monitoring software.  With Splunk you get 30 or 60 days evaluation and you could request a 1 GB key for trial.

In most cases, it is rare for logs to exceed 500 MB for environments of up to 2000 users.

Thanks Mohammed, I'll have a look. I know I didn't say this earlier, but bear in mind, we have 10,000+ users here...

I eventually managed to get around this using "Log Parser Lizard" tool, which is free up to a point. I tried ManageEngine, but unfortunately it didn't give the depth of detail that I required

Try Splunk just to see how much log you generate.
