ESXI Resource Pools

Ok so odd question  - ESXI Resource Pools

Do I need to reserve memory for my ESXI host (as in the host OS) to use, I mean it does not do much but it must need some resources for management etc

or

Has it done this for me already and I am over thinking it, so the host hides what it needs from the available resources so I could never over load the hardware to the point that I could not access ESXi though VSphere

I hope I am making sense here...

Thanks for any help

No, you do not need to reserve memory for your ESXi host, and if you look at all the VMs, when you start them ESXi, adds additional memory to the VM, so it can manage the VM and it's memory.

However, there is nothing stopping you overload the ESXi server, just be sensible, and if you have 32GB Host Memory, do not allocate 48GB of Active Memory to the VMs.

Because there is not enough host memory, the VMs and Host would start swapping to disk, which is bad, because this would cause performance issues.

So, usually what we do, is allocated memory, and use all host memory, and try to leave 2GB spare for the hypervisor.

No need to use resource pools, that's another level of management that's not required.
