2003 domain owner orphaned

I have a 2003 DC that I'm migrating to 2012 R2. However, the domain owner role is pointing to a server that has not been in production for 5 years. How can I take ownership of that role? do I take ownership on the 2003 server and then migrate it or can I take over that role on the 2012 R2 DC?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ntdsutil is the tool to seize roles.
Did you already join the 2012 as another DC?
If not joined, seize on the 2003.
The transition/transfer of roles when both are sync is straight forward..

I have NOT joined 2012 R2 to the domain.

How do I seize on 2003?
arnoldCommented:
The command is run from a command window,
Ntdsutil
Help
Will list the options.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/255504

You can list who has the current roles, and then seize it.

Adding to the above.
Ntdsutil
Roles
Here you should see the roles and which system has it.
seize role_name
Repeat for every role this server does not already control.

That is all.  Now when you go into properties of ADUC domainname, it should reflect this sever ad the rid, FSMO and... Role master.

You should also look at running the metadata cleanup. Double check what level your domain/forest level is at.  If not mistaken to add 2012 R2 after running the adorep32 /forestprep /domainprep
That your current level is 2003 native.
