SSRS Barcodes

Hi,

I would like to embed a barcode into a SSRS report. I have tried barcode fonts but it looks like I will have to install the barcode font on all client PCs, which I do not want to have to do.

I have found some barcode APIs online but am unsure if they will be safe or how to use them.

eg... CodePlex:
http://barcoderender.codeplex.com/

I was hoping that I could just install the barcode font on the SSRS server, but this does not seem to be the case.

Please can you help?

Thanks, Greg

I have little or no knowledge of SSRS, VB, or SQL; just a comment about use of bar-codes.

To produce any bar-code, there are several main stages:
Process the input data to transform it into bar-code 'units' - these units may be known as symbol character values, or code-words, depending on the selected bar-code symbology.
Calculate any required checksum character (for 1-D bar-codes), or error-correction code-words (for 2-D bar-codes).
Convert the aggregate calculated bar-code 'units' into a visual rendition (something that can be displayed and/or printed); this can be done using either a bar-code font, or directly using bitmap or vector graphics methods.

With some symbologies, the transformation process (creating the 'units') is very easy  (e.g. with Code39, the output 'units' have a 1-to-1 correspondence with the input characters); with others (e.g. Code128, or QRCode) the transformation process is much more complicated.

I have no idea if the package you reference is safe, or easy to use, or without errors.

This is a free product that works with SSRS using an image instead of a font.

I've used barcode fonts in SSRS before and it works fine, but you do need to have the font installed wherever the barcode needs to get rendered.  So if the report is accessed through Report Manager then the client needs to be able to render the code in the browser (HTML) so the client PC needs the font installed.

If the report is rendered as PDF then the font might not be needed on the client, only on the server.  But this is only when SSRS is able to embed the font in the PDF.
