# Excel - Separate Names in one field

If a field in excel has the names in one field, how can I separate first from last name?

First case, names separated by a space.

Second case, names separated by a comma.

Thank you

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Depending on your usual format, you can use a formula like the following:

FOR SPACES --
``````=TRIM(LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1,1)-1))
``````
``````=TRIM(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND(" ",A1,1)))
``````

FOR COMMAS --
``````=TRIM(LEFT(A1,FIND(",",A1,1)-1))
``````
``````=TRIM(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND(",",A1,1)))
``````

You can also try these combined formula which will work for either case

=LEFT(A1,IFERROR(FIND(",",A1),FIND(" ",A1))-1)
=TRIM(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-IFERROR(FIND(",",A1),FIND(" ",A1))))

You can also use the built in Data > Text to Columns function. Just select delimited space or delimited comma. Presto!

Then have a stern conversation about keeping this data separate.
