What is the best an most reliable way to get internet a thousand yds over water?

Hello Experts,
 I have a customer that needs to connect 2 businesses he owns to one server, looking for some suggestions, would it be better to just put in another Ethernet account at the one business an build a tunnel. Or would a pair of 900Mghz radios. My concerns are expense and or reliability. The radios seem like a much cheaper option but I worry about lightning and weather in general. Has anyone done this lately with  a fair amount of success an if so how did you go about it?

I have used Ubiquity in the past but I have read there are issues with sending a signal over water, not sure what it is but from what I have read a 2.4signal has issues over water, a 900Mghz is said not to be bothered by water but their is so much interference on the 900Mghz band that can cause issues.
I have a cottage where resort internet is by satellite dish of some sort and distributed by Wi-Fi to the cabins. Lightning and thunderstorms cause regular outages and I keep a Nokia CS-18 USB in my bag as backup.

For nearly a mile of Ethernet you need repeaters, so that does not seem practical.  

What about Internet at each location and then VPN. That will work, but speed will be an issue.

Those are my questions, this will be to run multiple Point of Sale workstations to the database on the server about a 1000 yds away. Actually it is probably less than that, more like a half mile but I figure rounding up is better. I've used VPN's for Medical EMR Prescriptions but I don't know how it would perform when time is of the essence, such as having a customer staring at you while you are trying to get their credit card run thru. I figured asking the Experts might save me some time an grief!

If I may chip in, I think what would work best is setting up a WAN via VPN (like John said) or a direct connection (CSU/DSU).  I am not fully sure how it is all configured, but branch offices use this type of setup.

Not sure which Internet service providers are available to you but a fast upload speed will be important so something like a T1 or better.

Then both locations would have ISP provided equipment that have the CSU/DSU units added that communicate with each other through the ISP connection.  Traffic encryption can be added with business grade routers at both locations.

Since you mentioned running credit cards, I think this setup will help towards PCI compliance as well.

Thank you, this is why I ask the experts, Compliance had not even crossed my mind but you are so correct. That is another issue I will be facing. Problem is that this is rural Oklahoma, internet options are limited unless you are willing to 5 to 6 hundred per T1 line. I have one cust paying for a T1 because that is all that is available and his speeds are 2Meg both ways. (AT&T) For this area the existing internet is descent, about 10Meg download but lucky to get 1 to 1.5 upload.
You said 1000 yards across water.  How far is it on Land?  You might consider Fiber if you can get the right of way.  Fiber is fast and much more resistant to environmental problems  Who owns the water?
