if you still have dvds, just insert the first one ( you may need to setup bios order, press 12 to do that ).
also, if you have one key recover button ( restore & recovery ) you can start-up your computer by pressing that button.

Did you download the complete SP2 service pack (just under 400MB) ?

Run the Microsoft Update Readiness tool for Vista 32-bit available here:

do you currently have service pack 1?
unfortunately, service pack 2 is not cumulative so you need to install service pack 1 first
if that isn't the issue, i would try downloading it again; the download might be corrupt

if you start afresh - try updating; watch that SP1 is installed, or install it yourself
then update again - and watch that SP2 gets installed - or download and install it yourself

First, when you say you downloaded the readiness tool, I assume you ran the readiness tool (before trying to install SP2).

Here is a generalized Microsoft Link for the readiness tool with instructions. The Vista 32-bit link is there. You might try downloading again and running it again according to the instructions.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

Here also is the generalized update troubleshooter site with a FixIT than might go back as far as Vista. It will tell you. Read down the link because there are some manual instructions you might need to try.

John guess what ? I was hoping to be in the end of this project and now the laptops shutdown after one minute.

Can this be a coincidence just becuae it's and old laptop with Vista ? or is doing this because it's 2 days that I am failing installing service pack 2 ?

What can I do now ? how can I find out why it shout down after 1 minute from when I turned on. I tried in safe mode and still it goes off after one minute ...:(

Hello Nobus,

I am embarrassed  to tell my friend that now the laptop doesn't turn on anymore. It's a Lenovo model number 0768 type: 0768-EJU
S/N: L3-KZ527 07/04
Product ID: 0768EJU

Thank you!

If the Microsoft Update Site tools and Readiness Tool does not assist and the situation is getting worse, you may need to back up and reinstall the operating system.

Vista is an orphaned OS, and you might wish to recommend backing up and installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.

i was considering doing that but when  went to the web site i couldn't find this model and i was afraid that after reinstalling the OS putting windows  7 i was going to be stuck with some missing drivers. if you assist me in this i would rebuilt this laptop from the scratch.

please, when you have a chance check the Lenovo web site and tell me if you are able to find the drivers for this model..thank you

That is a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop

It looks like it comes with XP and Vista and does not offer Windows 7.

It's an old laptop John which comes with Vista. After what you just told me you confirm my concerns, no drivers for windows 7. Do you think that the shut down is not a coincidence but has been caused by the Microsoft tool that I have installed ? Can I uninstall it from add and remove programs ? Does it show in there ?

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
The Microsoft tools should not cause this, but you can always uninstall and see.

The laptop is sufficiently old that a new laptop may now be s wise decision.

i would do a factory restore, and start all over; it should accept SP2 if you follow our guidelines above

Nobus I don't see any partition to do a factory restore....I would love to do that if I have the recovery partition...with the OS in it..but I don't see it...

Nobus and John, What you found it great. Even if it is clearly under my eyes I didn't realized that that button was giving me the option to restore this laptop to factory state. The only problem  I have now is that this laptop shuts down after one minutes that in on... it's so weird, it started doing this shut down thing after I installed that hot redline fix. so if it is not a coincidence I am trying first to uninstall that tools then If the laptop doesn't shut down I will reformat it to the factory state.

so weird, sometings its shuts down some other time it says up for hours...what can cause this weird behavior ?

Thanks,

Random shut downs (up for hours or minutes) could be caused be a root kit virus (I have seen this happen) or by an intermittent hardware problem.

The laptop is great now, it's fast and has a lot of space. I was able to install the majority of updates without any problem. I installed the antivirus and updated without any problem. but it doesn't take service pack 1.

now I don't want end up installing the hot fix tool you sent because I am afraid that it will shut down again :)...

what should I do ? I am going to open a new case so more points will come ....

It is an old laptop (according to you) so if working, leave it, and suggest a new laptop to the customer.
