Server Software / raise domain functional level

Hi,
i have all my servers running Server 2012 standard including my DC .... im going to install another DC which will then be my primary DC and the old one will be for redundancy..
Question is can i install Server 2012 r2 for the new DC?  or does it have to be Server 2012 standard also..
Also im going to move fsmo roles to the new DC so this will be primary - do i have to or can i raise the forest functional level within AD?? will i have to do this on the old server 2012 DC?

Can't see any problems with R2 being the NEW DC.

Install as normal.
Install AD and DNS roles.
Attach to the current domain.
Migrate FSMO roles alongside any other roles i.e fileserver, print server, dhcp etc
all done.

If you add a second DC to your network and it is 2012R2 and your first DC is 2012, the highest Forest Functional Level and Domain Functional Level you will be able to raise it to would be 2012, not 2012R2.

The below link will outline all of the things added or depreciated between 2012 and 2012R2 Forest/Domain Functional Level

Guys - would you suggest then just to keep everything as server 2012 standard? or does it not matter at all?
As will said i will not be able to raise it as 2012r2... Even if i install server 2012r2  this should not be no issue at all ?

There is no harm in adding the 2012R2 DC it is actually be preferred. I was just outlining the limitations where you will only be able raise the functional level to 2012.

It would be in your best interest to add the 2012R2 DC because it is compatible, it is a newer OS, and in the future you will only have to upgrade one of your 2012 DC's to R2. If you add an additional 2012 then you will need to upgrade both to 2012R2 so there is no point. Just promote a 2012R2 server and you will be fine.

Wicked will - thanks mate.  do you think its best to move all the fsmo roles to the 2012r2 DC? (this will be newer and quicker hardware) or to split the fsmo roles?

I normally keep fsmo roles on one DC but you can split them. Some of them being unavailable don't harm but some can cause havocs. Keep it simple,

Keep fsmo roles on 1 DC and make sure it is the DC with the most resources. So yes transfer them to the new 2012R2 DC once it has been promoted.

Do NOT split them, there is really no point and it just creates more complexity.
