Run System restore and rollback to the point when you remember it working last time.

tried.  still blank with spinning circle as if its trying to do something
Vadim RappCommented:
Run sfc /scannow

Also, if this onscreenkeyboard is part of some system feature that can be removed or added, remove and add back.

turned onscreen keyboard off and then on.  nothing.  couldn't find an uninstall feature for it.  ran sfc /scannow.  it found damaged files and repaired them.  rebooted and still keyboard is all white and unusable.  have to alt cntrl del just to close it.

This thread describes various efforts some of which helped:

There was Microsoft support article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/959332/ about similar problem; it related to Vista, but still see maybe there's some parallel.

Also, try to stop DNS client service.
Vadim RappCommented:
...also, if you have not already, give it enough time, like an hour. Chances are, after some timeout it will show something meaningful.

Microsoft fix ran and said doesnt apply to this computer :-(.  uninstalled all updates from past 3 months.  reboot.  still hung.  bizarre!! :-(
Vadim RappCommented:
Try to stop DNS client service and give it 1-2 hours. Great many problems eventually get through if you give them long time.
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
no clue how dns service could effect online keyboard but im with ya :-
).  just stopped it.  we'll see.... tks
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
5 hours, turned dns back on and rebooted.  still nothing but a frozen blank keyboard.  im at wits end
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
I have now restored back 3 months.  uninstalled everything that was installed in past 3 months.  turns dns off for 5 hours. did a scannow and repaired files.   the onscreen keyboard still comes up blank and doesn't allow anything to be done to it.  just a spinning circle.  have to close it by alt ctrl del or right click taskbar and select close.:-(
 this is maddening.
Vadim RappCommented:
Let's try to rename HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk to ...\Osk0, then launch on-screen keyboard so it recreates it.
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
tried different user.  created new user.  still blank & frozen......
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
excellent thought on the rename but same issue still :-(.  it did create a new registry entry for osk but launch of keyboard still brings the blank frozen image :-(
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
did an avast scan.  a taskkiller, a spybot scan a malwarebytes scan.  another reboot.  going to bed.  to be continued......
Vadim RappCommented:
Download this file, replace %windir%\system32\osk.exe and %commonprogramfiles%\ink with the contents.
Vadim RappCommented:
...if everything else fails, consider alternatives

downloaded file but it has many files.  not sure how to replace files in those directories :-(
nobusCommented:
make another user account, and try from that account
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
tried the other account angle.  same result.  the only thing I was unable to do was the replace osk file (would let me change the original one) or the commonprogramfile/ink suggestion because I didn't know what to do there.  I guess im going to just disable it and download an alternative like vadim suggested.
Vadim RappCommented:
> not sure how to replace files in those directories :-(

find  directory "ink" on your system, rename it to "ink0", then extract the one from the archive. Find osk.exe, rename, then replace by the one from the archive. I took them from my own win7 where it works OK.
nobusCommented:
any errors in device manager?  or in event viewer?
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
device manager all ok.  event viewer issue free as well :-(  bizarre...
nobusCommented:
what pc is this?
you may need to reinstall afesh - from DVd, or recovery partition, if you want this function again
StewartGilliganAuthor Commented:
thank you vadim for all your help.  I ended up using an alternative keyboard.  your attention on this was greatly appreciated :-)
