What is functional difference between VSS and VPC in Nexus

Hi Expert, as we know nexus is expensive, if we just focus on VPC function in Nexus, what is functional difference between VSS and VPC ? If we use VSS, it could be installed in several Cisco devices, which are very cheaper.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

That depends on whether you are looking at it from the two switches that are part of the VSS or vPC group or from the client switch.   From the client switch, there's really no difference in functionality. In fact, the client switch thinks that it has an etherchannel group with a single switch.

Now from the VSS or vPC peers, there's a world of difference. With VSS, the two switches which are participating in VSS don't even behave as two switches. Functionally, they are one switch.  It's just like when you stack 3750's. You may have 2 physical switches, but you think of it as one switch and configure it as one switch.

With vPC, both switches are separate entities. They each have their own config.  They communicate over the vPC peer link to exchange necessary information to maintain the vPC peering which allows them to present themselves to the client switch as a single etherchannel switch.

If we use VSS, it could be installed in several Cisco devices, which are very cheaper.
IIRC, VSS is only supported on 6500 and 4500 switches.

Thanks for your excellent and fast reply. In addition to 6500 and 4500, 6880 also support VSS. Thank you for your explanation, which confirms my concept on it.
