KB982670 .NET update will not install, .NET apparently corrupt

Please note: I had asked this question previously on EE and had mistakenly reported that the issue had been resolved.

My Lenovo X1 runs W7 Pro SP1 and has all updates except for KB982670. I recently successfully performed a Repair Install to resolve issues with Windows Update.

KB982670 will not install. When I reboot, I receive a message saying that .NET 4 Framework must be repaired and that I should not switch the computer off until Setup has finished. The message disappears after a few minutes. The computer operates normally, there are no obvious symptoms of an issue with .NET

At the suggestion of EE experts I have run Microsoft Fixit 50123 and John Hurst’s  .NET Framework Verification Utility. Neither have resolved this issue. The log file from the utility is attached. I also ran the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup utility and received a “Fatal error during installation” message.

All recommendations gratefully received.

I ran the Cleanup Tool. When I rebooted, I received the following message:

To run this application, you must forst install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:

v4.0.30319

Contact you application publisher ......

I tried running the .NET full install again and the Windows Update, both without success.
Have a read of this thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/error-code-643-cant-install-kb982670/7ce2fc47-88ad-40e9-be3a-c2e17d099b51

Also, are you getting the Error Code 643 as well?

There are a number of suggestions in the link.  Quite possibly the best is to hide the update and thus not install it.

Then try rebooting and running the Cleanup Tool again in case something has popped in.
Then try rebooting and running the reinstall of the .NET again.

KB982670 is five years old.  Why are you trying to install it now?  Messages?

I ran the Cleanup Tool again and was then able to do a full install successfully. Windows Update no longer wants to install KB982670. Thank you to all.
