How to apply vCenter patches to increase its build level
I have a vCenter server with version 5.5.0 and build number 2183111. I have another vCenter server managing a different environment with the same version number but higher build number of 2442329. I would like to know if it's necessary to upgrade my vcenter server build level and how to do it if It's necessary.
Thanks.

thanks, I think we have to upgrade it because of the slow SAN communication speed. vmotion in this lower vcenter server is slower than on the other newer one.
how could i find the backend database information for this vCenter server?

vCenter does not connect to your SAN.
Hosts connect to your SAN.
You mean the SQL database?

I am not sure about what you meant. Since we have two vCenter servers for two different vshpere environments. When we vmotion or storage migrate some vms, we found the speed on the old vcenter is slower than the new one, so we guess it's the vcenter's version problem. Do you think it's the cause of the slowness? Thanks.
I got the backend sql database from the system DSN tab on vCenter server OS.
My question is since the new installer is the same version as the old one, will it have problem to run if the old version is still on the server?
Please advise.

yes, i made a clone of the vcenter server and also made a full backup of the database.
I will do it tonight, will let you know the result.
thank you, Andrew, have a nice night.

do I need stop the vcenter services to backup the database and cloning?
I am afraid the data has been modified inside the databse when I am backuping.

No, data will change, e.g. performance data, but the configuration will be the same.
If you need to rollback.

I finished the upgrade successfully. It runs smoothly without any problem.

very good solution.
However, I would not upgrade for the safe of upgrading, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
