I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You will pay an ATM fee at any location in Ireland if you use an American Bank. Your bank will charge you a small fee, usually less than 5 bucks, for each transaction you is best to take out larger amounts of money to reduce your fees.

With regards to credit cards, you will pay a foreign transaction fee or conversion fee. That said, the acquiring bank of your credit card offers you a much more favorable exchange rate than using travelers checks or exchanging dollars. Using credit cards are the cheapest way to travel when overseas.

If I were you, I would work almost exclusively from credit cards and only use cash for the pubs and small shopping. This will reduce your costs and make it easier to travel. When I went to Dublin, this strategy worked great.

I use a Charles Schwab checking account card (connected to my Schwab account) when I travel abroad. It never charges you a conversion fee, reimburses you for all ATM charges (domestic or abroad), and can also act as a debit or credit card.

You will need to open a high yield checking account in order to qualify, but there is no minimum deposit required and no monthly service fee. The best part is: you can use the card in any ATM.
