Filemaker value list does not display correct name but stamps correct id

Having difficulties. Everytime I choose a name out of several names, it only displays on my layout the first name created on the table. When clicking on the dropdown, it displays all my names, but when I select one, it gives me the first record name. when I look in the database , it does correctly stamp it the correct id. on my layout of device settings I have a field called related vendorID. This field is used when a physical device has settings located in a vendor record.  The way it works is if a user selects a vendor name drom the dropdown and clicks on the search button , it pulls up the vendors record. that works correctly, even if it displays the wrong vendor name. it does stamps the id correctly. why is it that it is displaying the incorrect vendor name from the dropdown value list?  the bottom filed of device settings is the relatedvendorID from the table belonging to device settings. the field on top is the name field from vendor settings. it is set as a text with no browse but yes to find. pls advice. I have been at this for four days and it is beginning to get frustrating. I have recreated the fields and value list several times and the issues still persist. also, the fileds were created from new , did not do any copiying.

The easiest way to figure it out would be to see a sample file if you can post it or send it to me directly.

The only thing I can think of is that there is some mismatch between the relationship used for the value list and the field that has the popup menu. Is the field that the popup on in the same table that the layout is based on or from a related table?

I'm not seeing anything unusual....could you upload a clone of the file with a few fake records in it? If you want to send it directly rather than post it publicly here, just click on my profile and message me.

Will, these two next pics are the settings for the two fields.
the text field should display the name of the vendor, the second field below the first stamps the vendorID.
It stamps the vendor ID but displays the first record only from the vendor namestext field with property settingsDropdown field with valuelist property settings

Will, I can not stop the database because it is in production, so I will not be able to clone it. Plus, I would need to do a lot of cleaning of it to only allow viewing of the segment I am working on.
Would there be a reason why or a cause why such behavior is evident?

Yes, your screen shots provide some clarification.

1. You're using a "Drop-Down List" which is different, and functions differently, from the "Popup Menu" you mentioned in your original post.

2. You appear to have two fields, one for the ID and one to display the name. If you only have the ID field and you use a Popup menu set to "Show second field only", the correct Vendor name should appear

3. If you want to use a Drop-Down list on the ID field with a Vendor name field layered on top of it - which is what it appears you have now - then the Vendor Name field needs to be based on a separate relationship FROM the selected Vendor ID field - "RelatedVendorID" it looks like - TO the Vendor Settings table.

Will, I tried option @ and it worked. It displays the correct vendor name and stamps the correct RelatedVendor_id.

For option 3, are you saying I should use a separate relationship for deviceSettings::relatedVendorID to VendorSettings::VendorID ?
And that would do the same as option#2?

I've used drop-down through many of my layouts because I use filters to only pull specific info, such as :serverNames or HostNames.

Is it best practice then that I should use a pop-up menu for displaying all fields in a table than the two fields layered on top of each other which then requires a relationship to be built for it?

Hello Will, I just posted another question that maybe you can assist me with.
The subject line to it is:

Notes and task does not clear out of the display panel after being read

You can use a popup menu or a drop-down list but the difference is that:

1. With the Popup menu you can use just one field, the RelatedVendorID field, and the correct name will display when your value list includes the name field as your's does.

2. With a Drop-down menu, the Vendor name will NOT display as it does with a Popup menu and you must have a second non-editable field layered on top of it that contains the VendorName field using a relationship from the RelatedVendorID to Vendors.

If a popup menu will work for what you need, it will save you from having to layer and create a second relationship (if that relationship did not already exist). In come cases you want the relationship and the layer because you want to display something slightly different than what appears in the Popup Menu and value list.
